New data law


The rapid technological advances have led to accessing the privacy data through various activities. Many business consider biometrics to be applicable for government use only but they are quickly learning that the use of biometrics is extended far beyond the government use. Biometrics based technology are used to make the process of authentication more convenient and secure. By an individual biometrics we can easily find “who they are” because each person has unique and personal biometric traits. Later only government had access to our biometric traits inorder for security and identification , nowadays even most of the smart phones has access to our fingerprints and iris scan inorder to unlock mobile phones. Biometric identification management systems offer high security, convenience, accurate data results and these technologies had made do our operations more easily and efficiently .

The Clause 92 of Data Protection Bill seeks to ban the processing of certain form of  biometric data. By this ,unlocking a mobile phone using fingerprint or face scan, Alexa device, and iris scan to access your bank account-these services provided by various company’s may get impacted. The data protection trying to minimize the intrusion into the privacy of an individual.

Every industries in each sector will get directly affected by Clause 92. From the digital commerce to banking, health care and even automobile industry which are using the biometric data will have to deal with the impact after the Bill is signed into law. The companies like Google and Amazon provide many services like voice assistant ,Google translate, Alexa voice assistant will get highly impacted. The law has not passed yet, and it is not clear what sort of biometric will be allowed and what won’t and which firm can collect what kind of data. It could lead to regulatory confusion and complicate things for companies that are involved in dealing with biometric data.

By Clause 92 –makers of voice based assistants, such as Google and Amazon, Mobile phone manufacturers, Fintech firms, Hospitals, health care companies and institutions, Smart TV manufacturers, voice based household equipment manufacturers may be hit.
