Fried and Tested : Zomato takes the lead in drive for clean fuel

Indian restaurant aggregator and food delivery startup ZOMATO used cooking oil from eateries to be processed into biodiesel. Biodiesel refers to a vegetable oil- or animal fat-based fuel consisting of long-chain alkyl (methyl, ethyl, or propyl) esters. Biodiesel is typically made by chemically reacting lipids (e.g., vegetable oil, soybean oil, animal fat (tallow)) with an alcohol producing manufacturing carboxylic acid esters.

As per Kala ram, the three basic necessities of his life on the road are food, water, and diesel. However, in order to meet the daily need for diesel, new biodiesel was manufactured and tested on his truck and asked for an opinion on the performance of the truck on road. the fuel was derived from used cooking oil (UCO), collected from the food outlets and kitchens in Delhi.

These UCO from the kitchens of OM sweets were sent for processing at BioD plant in Bawal.
Zomato initiates to collect the diesel which was processed in the BioD plant was then collected by the zomato representatives. Initially, this biodiesel was supplied to the local vendors and after the tie-up with the zomato, they were able to pursue the deal.

Zomato says that the poor quality of food is due to the over usage of oil. So in order to have a cleaner food, Zomato is collecting the used oil and selling the same, that means the UCO, to BioD at a smaller margin.

According to Food Safety and standards, Authority of India, the cooking oil used in the restaurants is bought and then sold to small vendors. So the job of Zomato is to ensure the no more reused oil is used in the restaurants and each and every drop of oil should land in a biodiesel plant.

The company also told that they would launch these services in five more places.
Major oil marketing companies bought these biofuels (non distilled) at an assured rate of Rs51 per liter. And five percent of these biodiesels are blended with conventional diesel in accordance with the government norms. In fact, it gives a price advantage of Rs 10 per liter for the end-user.
Bio-Diesel not only gives a price advantage but also satisfaction fo using a cleaner and sustainable fuel.
