After city
got a bicycle mayor in May last year focus has now shifted to the youngsters. Bicycle mayor Prakash P
Gopinath has initiate a programme among city students to select a junior
bicycle mayor who can promote cycling among the students.
Students
from schools which are part of bicycle brigade can participate in this
selection process . Staff coordinator of the bicycle brigade can nominate students
coordinator and another students for junior bicycle mayor by logging to the

Students
ages between 12 and 16 and the students studying in class 6 to 11 in any school
in the city can be nominated . Junior bicycle mayor will be selected from the shortlisted candid dates
by a jury during the open defense on the World Bicycle Day which is on June 3.
There will
be points for conducting workshop in the
schools , organizing ride with
family and friends , and therefore it helps to
introduce cycling to new friends
etc.
According
to the organizers, the junior bicycle mayor will be an honorary position, who
will be the ambassador of cycling among bicycle brigades. The juniors bicycle
mayor will get opportunities to represent the city in national level cycling
promotion events to speak at the different platforms about cycling and its
benefits and engage in activities to make the city safer for children to
commute in cycles. The juniors bicycle mayor can hold the position for about one year.
“Compared
to others , children will be better effective campaigners to promote cycling
among their peers . Cycling is also a kind of exercise which create a positive
impact on health, Currently Valsad in
Gujarat is the only city to have a junior bicycle mayor. Along with us Guwahati
too will select a junior bicycle mayor on june 3 . Here nominations will be given by staff coordinators of bicycle brigades in
their schools ,said Gopinath .
In every city the bicycle mayor will be
responsible for selection of the junior bicycle mayor and this will take the campaign into the
next level and people are also supporting this cause since it is safe for the children and it also benefits them to
a great level .
